Reads “I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.” Mewtwo from Mewtwo Strikes Back

“I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life  that determines who you are.” Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Why not continue the Pokemon theme?

So this poignant quote, written by Takeshi Shudo for Mewtwo a genetically engineered Pokemon. Mewtwo was created to be a manmade replacement for Mew, thought to be a kind of the genesis of all Pokemon. If you’re not familiar with the 150  and 151st Pokemon, Mew on the left and Mewtwo on the right;

Mew & Mewtwo, from the "Jhoto Journey" opening credits

Mewtwo was unhinged for the fact that it was not only bought into existence by humans (which it detests) but to be a replacement for another Pokemon. Mewtwo managed to surpass that, after seeing the love and development of Ash and Pikachu. At first, Ash was just another human, another reason for all the pain and existence of living, so as insignificant as possible. Then Pikachu, to Mewtwo, a common every day electric rat, again something so small. Then Mewtwo saw what they could do, and do together.

Just a simple message, that even if we are from a low background we can work towards being something better. A supportive network, friends or family, can help everyone develop- I know that first hand. I can only help that everyone has the chance for one.

You know what’s even better? It came from a cartoon, an anime, something that is often described as “just for kids”. Sometimes watching these things is not just uplifting but also a great watch.
